See, the thing about new places is that you don't know anything about them. She heard about this place, a place for gifted people such as herself, and so she got in as soon as she possibly could. It sounded, at the time, like the deal of a lifetime. Everything to her, because of her situation or something else (she didn't really pay attention to any specifics other than weaseling her way in as soon as possible) was free. Now, this could possibly have been the case with any student simply because of the implications of this institute. They were important, and being so important Ari tuned them out in favor of salivating over free food. Free good food. And free shelter. Ari had her clothes, Ari had her keepsakes (and the huge metal gauntlet she carried with her at all times), and Ari had just about everything she needed to live comfortably for the next period of time ranging from months to years depending on how long her stay was.
Everything except friends. Ari was alone here. Truly and undoubtedly alone. It was an odd feeling. She had run away because she felt so alone, yet she came here to this sprawling place filled with people and weird reptile things that she avoided like the plague and... She was alone. Great, awesome. Maybe it was how she looked. Everyone else looked fairly odd to her, but that was normal here. Headdress blankets weren't exactly the look here, but Ari never claimed to be fashionable, only utilitarian. Now that was an excuse.
Still, being alone had its side effects from there. She found it weird to be walking about aimlessly with nobody to talk to. She could say that she was taking in the sights, or... Nah. She whipped out a small, folded up piece of paper and stuck her nose in it, trying to find out where she was going. Ari was good with maps, for sure, so she could find her way. There was one distinct disadvantage to being alone and wandering in one direction. She made contact with someone else. And it wasn't just an awkward arm brush. Ari, not looking where she was going, pretty much ran right into someone. She was much more preoccupied on apologizing rather than finding out who this person was.
"Oh my gosh I'm so sorry! I was just looking here at this map. I'm still pretty new and I didn't really know where I was going so I was going to get back to where I wanted to go, and then... Sorry!" And the first impression Ari made was a weird, oblivious motormouth. Ten points and a gold star. Ugh. Ari seriously needed to stop embarrassing herself like this. Experiencing this once was enough. After this, she vowed, she'd always watch where she was going. This was certainly going to be just awful...
