Appearance:
(Basic Barrier Jacket)
Nanoha has a heart-shaped face, is thin-framed, and is shorter because of her Japanese heritage. She looks her age and has no recognizable body markings or scars, nor does she use makeup. Most notably, she has two specific attires. One happens to be her regular elementary school uniform or daily assemble of outfits, and the other is her Barrier Jacket. At the moment only one variation exists of the Barrier Jacket, but it is possible that she will create more variations for protection to switch in different modes.
During warm days she can be spotted with a long-sleeved red shirt under a short-sleeved white shirt. The red shirt has medium orchid bands circling around the ends of its sleeves (the first stripe twists like a rainbow with two smaller ones underneath), while the collar of the white shirt has three stripes on the chest of the same color. Medium orchid is also her miniskirt's color, and white socks reach past her knees down to adorn heelless red shoes.
On cooler days Nanoha sports a long-sleeved tan sweater with a raised collar and an eye-catching, dark sunset orange miniskirt. The collar, bottom, and ends of the sleeves are the same color. In the same vein, black stockings a little higher than her knees with small brown boots complete the attire.
Most of all, she often wears an elementary school uniform whether there is a reason or not. It is a white sailor-style dress with a black shirt underneath. On the underside portion of the outfit's billowing skirt is a contrasting lime green color. Its cuffs, the edges of the sailor flaps, and the one line running around the bottom of the dress are black. To finish off the outfit, a velvet red bow lies in the middle of her chest, along with lime socks and small-heeled brown shoes.
But in order to be a mage, she cannot battle enemies without protective gear. Nanoha summons her Barrier Jacket once it is activated by Raising Heart's Device Mode, or sometimes if she is in a pinch, Stand By Mode. The Barrier Jacket is removed if her device is damaged or deactivated, and the clothes Nanoha wore before the armor replaced them are returned. She shortens the transformation’s lengthy paraphrase to boil down to "Raising Heart, please!"
In particular, Nanoha's Barrier Jacket was imagined by her and Raising Heart to resemble her elementary school sailor-style dress uniform, but instead is mostly pure white and sapphire blue. On top of that, she wears black socks with white boots, a yellow band twisting around where the top of the boots cut halfway. The material seems flimsy, but is nonetheless reliable.
Under the Jacket, a white corset covers a cobalt shirt, and two big bows, one gold and the other rose, neatly weave together in the middle of her chest. Resting between the bows is a small, crimson jewel, or a decorative replica of Raising Heart in Stand By Mode. The shoulders of the Jacket are broadly padded, the edges of the sailor flaps blue, and a black, metal waistguard snugly wraps around Nanoha's stomach. To counteract the chilly breeze from flying, she wears white shorts beneath the skirt for comfort.
On the Jacket's flowing skirt, two thick, sapphire stripes vertically stretch-out on both sides in the back and front. The sleeves are long and white with blue stripes also on the sides, and large, blue plate made out of metal covers her wrists, black triangles from beneath the guards poking out towards her elbow. One yellow line follows the path of the black triangle, though another zigzags in a circle around the plates. Moreover, fingerless black gloves protect from magical friction and raise to about her elbow under the guard.
Thanks to red gems and other invisible spells acting as defensive field generator enhancements on the various parts of the Jacket for magic or collision, serious injury is reduced during combat. For example, she can fly into a building and bounce off without a single scratch or bone broken. The gems can be found on her shoulders, gloves, guard plates, the bottom of her skirt, fronts of her shoes, and other such places for convenience.
Personality:
Nanoha is an ordinary little girl. On the outside, she has a shining, sweet personality which does nothing but kind-hearted deeds for golden intentions. She is charming, open, and outgoing to everyone she encounters. It hardly matters if the person is an ally, foe, or a random person down the street. She wants to protect people and make them her friends. Furthermore, she is energetic and idealistic, and does many activities by herself; she can juggle multiple tasks simultaneously with ease. Technically she is not a comical person or soft-spoken, not entirely feminine, and might not notice aspects of romance. Though, those things are rightfully explained with her age.
In every respect, her main desire is to be with her family and friends forever. Nanoha is thankful for everyone in her life and wants them to be joyful, and would be content with peaceful, gentle days in their presence. Like her other longstanding promises and beliefs, she pours her strengths into responsibilities and dutiful actions, and sticks with her desire to keep that same lifestyle in check. But one driving reason for that good will is though she deeply loves those close to her, a darker feeling has resided in her heart for years.
In the beginning, chiefly when she was four and five years old, Nanoha harbored a disconnection to the important people surrounding her because she felt insignificant to them. Since Nanoha is so loyal to people, she hides within herself without them. Her family did not ignore her, though she suffered some depression when they labored at work a healthy portion of the time and she was left to her own devices, as having nobody to converse with when sitting alone on the living room couch while waiting for them to return. At this point Nanoha is without the concerned friends she meets later on and it is more upsetting. Likewise to her own predicament, she does not like to see people treated with loneliness, She would empathize and gladly help them.
While keenly observing people, Nanoha imagined herself to play a bit part or supporting role in other people's unraveling affairs. Even if it was not for the best she abode by her own solution to the problem and hung by the sidelines and did not intervene. To her, everyone appeared to have someone else to comfort them from reality and she was denied the pleasures of an invaluable, special person. Nanoha managed to keep those feelings sealed off and buried so only a few friends could identify when she was bothered her as she grew older, and while her family can tell if she is upset, they do not completely notice that deep-seated sensitivity. Thus, Nanoha's major tendency to not openly discuss emotions and feelings, and bottle them until forced to admit such things, hurts her on a profound psychological scale. So it is relevant for her to make friends in order to convey her thoughts.
Nanoha's depression is especially prevalent when her father is critically injured in bodyguard work. He is sent to the hospital and placed in ICU, and in accordance, helplessness and sadness take their toll on her wishes for more time with her family. Similarly, his accident became another trigger for her to not want other loved ones to worry as she did, and enter the battlefield to protect people like him and her former self. Shiro fully recovers and retires from the job to work in the family business and coach a team, but the wounds from that period cut deep and are preserved fresh in Nanoha's memory. She had, and still to this day, hoped for the power to change her course of journey when none was evident.
Based on previous experiences, she is uncertain of her purpose and path of future goals. Nanoha feels void of a reason, out of sync without a direction for occupations to take, and sees no alternatives for what to do next. She is supposed to be one of the family members to handle Midori-ya when she is an adult, except that prospect is not too thrilling, even if sweets are wonderful. All she acknowledged is that she wants to find her own special place in the world, but what her true place seems faraway and elusive. Everyone else appears to have fulfilling plans, after all. That makes her satisfied for them, but not herself. However, those thoughts only dominate her outlook until she is introduced to magic's art and style. She automatically adopts it as her outlet.
Nanoha loves her magical powers and heeds a calling to assist people out of jeopardizing moments. She never states it explicitly, but her unwavering dedication and tactful work ethic make those aspects of her apparent. There are still fragments from depression underlying everything else, but not as often with the wheels of time squeaking forward. She faithfully sticks to her decisions, and effectively continues to change her destiny.
Every day she keeps tabs on training to hone her abilities to better degrees: for example, practicing in the mornings to gain shooting control without Raising Heart. When first using the device she was confused by the tasks thrown at her, but in a short timeframe adapted to the new powers and accepted them without complaint. In fact, she sometimes uses more raw power than necessary in important situations and might not realize it, though everything is fine in the end. On a level, that projects her serious nature for the job. Without her newfound powers, Nanoha would be devastated.
On another note for internal qualities, she is prolifically thoughtful about life and people, and strategic for battle. At the core of Nanoha's priorities, she attempts to hit the root of someone's motivations, problems, and actions before making decisions regarding them. Her assumptions can miss a handful of times or her ideas for targeting an enemy might backfire because she has not seen years of active duty to form elaborate schemes, but at a moment’s notice she nails the mark above the average of her age bracket. Still, none of that changes being a girl who enjoys fun like going shopping or visiting a movie theater.
Normally Nanoha is against fighting for no proper reason. When she met Suzuka and Alisa in the first grade, she slapped Alisa for taunting and bullying Suzuka. Though in necessary times, she is liable to perform brute force when communication is beyond question and her opponents will not listen. Nanoha has a potent dislike for people not paying attention to her so she can find out about them personally, which is why she tries to reason with people before battle and asks them to explain their circumstances in order to provide assistance. To show her humble attitude, she may introduce herself first and then prompt others to so a bond of understanding is reached.
In showing these qualities, Nanoha blasts Fate with Starlight Breaker in a showdown when Fate would not speak, and slams Vita with Divine Buster when she would not listen to her after asking why she attacked her. It could be said that she befriends with superior firepower from such actions. Then there is Nanoha's rare White Devil persona. After Vita calls Nanoha a devil while questioning her and fire is blazing in the background after a attack, this behavior is unveiled as Nanoha informs her rival that it is okay to be a devil. She would "use her hellish weapons" (while frowning and holding Raising Heart) for Vita listen, whether she was willing to lend a ear or not. Nothing more touches on Nanoha's deviation, though this should not be exaggerated since it is not a commonplace piece of her personality. But still, it could resurface if someone needs the lesson. "Listen or be shot" is arguably her motto.
In total after longing for a friend and not having anyone to talk to who would understand her serious feelings, loyalty and friendship are Nanoha's most prized traits. She would not have become as confident and capable without Fate's additional companionship, nor Hayate and the Wolkenwritter Knights' turnover. She holds herself in a a tough exterior to compensate for weakness and boost independence, and would most likely not cry or inform anyone about injuries if she believes they are treatable otherwise, as falling from the sky and landing hard enough to open a wound. In dire times as the chance a friend is held captive, Nanoha might devise a way to conquer the foe with force. Similarly, she exhibits a somewhat strict temper when she wants something accomplished without nonsensical action, and believes people should first attempt things by themselves. And in battle territory, she is flexible and watches to learn fighting styles to handle Raising Heart. Nanoha is now a more grateful, mature individual from the molding of such magical growth, though sometimes fails to realize the impact of such willpower.
Abilities & Weaknesses:
Powers/Abilities:
Miscellaneous:
- Restrict Lock: Binding-type magic. Little circular cuffs wrap and latch around someone's wrists and ankles to prevent attacking or escaping.
- Area Search: Extends magical senses to find disturbances in close range. It is done with Raising Heart's internal programs.
Wide Area Search: Improved version. A ball of light is released to different, further places out of visual perimeters while Raising Heart controls and monitors the search. Nanoha has to simultaneously manage it with anything else she does, and depending on the distance and the specific guidance of her commands, it might be distracting.
Offensive Attacks
- Holding Net: Creates a large, sturdy net with small-spaced holes to catch nearly anything, or it could be used as a landing area for falling objects of numerous weights. It flies at the target and entraps them without much leeway for retreat. A surrounding magic field shocks like electricity upon struggle, and shrinks to the size of the individual for movement restriction.
- Crossfire Shoot: No device. Superficially similar to Axel Shooter. Five large shots of raw magical energy are fired straight at someone at once.
- Shoot the Bullet: Cannon Mode. It takes en seconds to load and launch at close range. One blast like a bullet fires from Nanoha's dominant hand through a shield and heads in the direction she aims in to rip straight into an enemy. Must be locked-on first for accuracy.
- Barrel Shot: Can be cast after an attack in Excelion Mode for mid-range, high-speed battle. An invisible Bind-type field spell is shot at the opponent to wrap around their body, preventing their movement to leave them open for a bombardment attack.
- Bind Break: Support magic, but acts like an attack. Attempts to deactivate binding spells. The time required depends on the complexity of the target magic, so a matter of minutes could be required. Two magic circles are generated on the two sides of the bind to break it by placing constant pressure and force them into submission. It is possible to be brushed off, but they try to clamp down like the jaws of life. "Break!" is the proper call.
- Divine Shooter: A rapid-reaction attack that creates five magical energy balls to guide through the air at a target from the front to rear.
Axel Shooter: Axel Mode. Upgraded version. Allows about a dozen high-speed missiles to be guided in the same way as Divine Shooter. - Divine Buster: Used in Shooting Mode. Stereotypical particle beam shot that aims straight at the foe.
Divine Buster Extension: Has a longer range in about a mile longer, and a targeting reticule/scope for more accuracy.
Excelion Buster: Excelion Mode. Second most powerful attack. Involves few supporting magics, but is similar to Divine Buster with far more attack power. The command phrase is "Break shoot!" - Force Burst: Four cartridges. Fires like Divine Buster, but more forceful to push enemies back to where she wants them. Thus, the damage to someone is reduced in favor of catching them off-guard. She might fire all arms of the shot at once, or delay the last one until after the others weaken the target's defenses.
- Starlight Breaker: Can be used in Sealing Mode. It is a Nanoha's trump card and a more powerful variation of Divine Buster, and is the longest of her attacks to build, sometimes taking longer than five minutes. Dispersed particles of power are vital because the attack gathers and reuses scattered remnants of magical energy from the environment in the combat airspace and battlefield. Afterwards in a "light beam converging" effect, it is unleashed in a crashing blow that engulfs everything in its path at a great distance of about a mile, like destroying several buildings. Nanoha is usually left tired after finishing with this.
Starlight Breaker Plus: Variant extends the time spent collecting magical energy to increase the overall devastating power. Can pierce force fields. Goes a little further than a mile.
Starlight Breaker Extension: Used in Exelion Mode with a full magazine of cartridges to meet or exceed the attack power of "Plus" in less time. In total, it can hit in a more precise matter, as perchance a straight beam than a crashing blast that strikes right toward the foe, and to an extent, can follow their movements if they try to inch away.
- Protection: Auto-guard that protects as a transparent shield. Guards in every direction as a tall, cone-shaped barrier. Penetrated relatively easily.
Protection Powered: More powerful version. Can withstand enhanced attacks, even with boosts of power. Requires two cartridges. - Round Shield: A powerful barrier shield to withstand prolonged attacks for multiple minutes. Requires concentration, so it guards in one direction. She uses one hand to hold it in front of her. It is a round, transparent but still pink, and is about the size of the upper part of Nanoha's body.
- Flier Fin: Allows Nanoha to fly as high as she wishes and quickly increases movement speed. Medium-sized wings protrude from the side of her shoes.
Axel Fin: An upgrade to Flier Fin with slightly larger wings for greater speed at the cost of some maneuverability, thus could result in crashes. - Flash Move: Temporarily increases movement speed by twenty miles per hour or more. If used in conjunction with a melee attack, the resulting explosion is a Flash Impact.
- Active Guard: Similar to "Reactor Purge" and "Barrier Burst." It makes the reactive armor's principle to repel another type of energy and cast the magic upon an enemy or area away from the mage's location. Like her Barrier Jacket, energy bounces off.
- Reactor Purge and Barrier Burst: Similar in principle to reactive armor on modern tanks. The Reactor Purge defense is the strongest thing the Barrier Jacket can dish out. In basic, the Barrier Jacket will "detonate" in a white light within a few feet when it is finally prompted to be at its protective limit (if the protective spells are damaged or a quick method is needed to block or hit at close range) to counteract attacks. It has nothing to do with Raising Heart and works with Nanoha's will. The magic surrounding her and its own powers are used as the sheer force. If all else fails, it is used for a last resort, though the Barrier Jacket cannot be summoned again for a few hours proceeding. Likewise, the same thing occurs at the point an active barrier (such as Protection) is detonated for Barrier Burst. The power comes flies out in all directions and mostly used to counter melee attacks, though when the force is greater, it can fly like glass shards.
Weapons:
Raising Heart
- Raising Heart, formally Raising Heart Excelion after its upgrade, is Nanoha's partner that provides advice for battle and fire control. Its Mid-Childan creation makes it well-equipped. It is sturdy and functions well, even it clashes with other weapons. It has been enhanced with elements from an upgrade that included Ancient Belkan magic (from faraway in the universe). Now it can boost power by cartridges, which are loaded in regular magazines and produce larger range attacks.
- Artificial intelligent device which speaks in clear, broken bits of English (Nanoha understands because she took some English in school). It communications through the mechanical voice of a woman. The weapon's exact origins are a mystery, though Yuuno found it in a ruin on his home world, Mid-Childa. Probably for her bravery - it was compatible with Nanoha and accepted her as its first registered owner.
- Heals with internal support programs that activate if Raising Heart is damaged, chipped, or shuts down unexpectedly as emergency measures for backup generator. On its own it feeds on an outside source of magic, as Nanoha's Linker Core, to fuel and install repairs that it is programmed to. While this is the preferred method for minor scraps, software updates or versions of information have to be equipped by those familiar with how to upgrade through technical aspects.
- A magical circle must materialize under Nanoha's feet because it enables shooting maneuvers and other such things. The circle appears as a ring on the outside with curved, scribbled lines that branch out in illegible but repeated writing, rotating triangles are directly inside that, and a smaller circle fill in the last part of the middle. In short, the circle controls the area's mana, absorbs magic, and directs the flow of power as a stabilizer. Even if Nanoha is hurt right before launching attacks, her magical energy has been transferred to Raising Heart beforehand. She is then able to shoot even if there is some delay, though the trigger must be pulled.
- Nanoha is one out of three known mages who hail from Earth with her magical type. Raising Heart completes that title's outfit. To make her power over the weapon more vocal, her personal incantation for it is "Lyrical! Magical!" This lasts a while, and is used to unlock abilities more complex than simple force fields. The activation phrase is "Raising Heart, Set Up!" to which Raising Heart replies "Stand by. Ready."
- Stand By Mode: Unactivated form that appears as a red gem about 1.5cm in diameter. It has minimal power, but can still perform assistant magic as sensing nearby magical foes or mental image training in a specific space or landscape of Nanoha's choice.
- Stand By Mode Version Two: Identical to regular Stand By Mode, but this one can generate a Barrier Jacket without being released. It occasionally floats under its own power with two light fins similar to Flier Fin.
- Device Mode: Default weapon form. It appears as a white staff with pink capping the top and bottom. Blue parts are added to the staff body's neck and tail. A red jewel that stays constant through changes is suspended within a partial gold ring at the top. This ring is the main part of Raising Heart that transforms into different modes and forms. Two exhaust valves are on the ring, one sticking out in both the front and back.
- Sealing Mode: The head of the Device Mode extends away from the main body, and two energy wings spread from the gap to the sides. Previously used to seal Jewel Seeds to not fuse with anything and run rampant, but now can pinpoint other destructive disturbances as raw energy and seal them within a solid object or temporarily lock them in a suspended cage.
- Canon Mode: Functions for Shooting and Sealing Modes, though acts more like a cannon. Nanoha is debating on what else to do with this one to set it a part from the othe modes. Besides extra blue and white parts, a 180°-turnable trigger unit (firing grip) materializes on the neck of the staff.
- Shooting Mode: Anything from short to long attacks are useable. Attacks have to power up for a few minutes. The gold section of Raising Heart's head dematerializes and reforms into a squarer shape with two prongs.
- Excelion Mode: Cartridges can only be used in this mode. Less stable than the other modes. Magical usage damage is untreatable if it is mismanaged and overused over a span of years (to the body, because it puts a greater strain on the flow of magical energy throughout the Linker Core, internal organs, and the limbs because boosts in a short period). For this reason, it is beneficial to take breathers between having this mode handled for extended times, and the sour effects can be put to a lesser degree with effort. For Buster Mode within this mode (where things are launched), the head widens and extends away from the body, its prongs move closer together, and a set of fins sprout from the gaps. The end result resembles a golden spearhead set with a jewel that generates two sets of energy wings. The staff's butt is equipped with a rocket engine as part of ASC.
- Buster Mode: Improved version of Shooting. There is a sub-grip for a trigger that aids in comfort and precise aim. It is supposed to shoot with more strength, but Nanoha is working out kinks for the mode to stand out. When further along, the idea is that a screen that locks onto heat waves from invisible enemies or other such threats at a far distance will be able to keep those traces pinned and honed on for chases (which it can now, but it is less accurate), or other heavily calculated practices. Still, it is more powerful than Shooting for long-range.
- Axel Mode: Mid-range, high-speed combat mode. Half of her usual long range is lost in favor of shooting faster and reflexively. Identical to Device Mode, except for the addition of a Cartridge System (like Exelion Mode) resembling a rifle magazine.
- Accelerate Charge System (ACS): This causes rapid acceleration while in Exelion/Exceed Mode. When active, Raising Heart generates six light wings and a Strike Flame energy bayonet from her tip. The bayonet is combined with a burst of speed from the energy wings to penetrate a target's magic defenses like a drill. If accomplished, a massive burst of energy is unleashed inside the target's defenses like an explosion. Two cartridges are spent for the first phase, three for the second.
Strengths:
- Body: Being smaller, she is capable of dodging certain attacks, can fit into cramped places, or underestimated for her strength.
- Talent: Nanoha's gift is to be tactically smart to defeat a range of foes. She demonstrated impressive magical output upon Raising Heart's initial activation, and specializes in long-range shooting attacks with guided projectiles. Even if painful, she exercises her limits to improve, which gives her an edge on the battlefield where she may formulate ideas on the spot to use for her advantage. Plus, her abilities are balanced and she has a high defensive power.
- Friendship: Her loyalty to others shows that she a reliable comrade, and will not ditch them in the heat of battle.
- Magic: Nanoha is ranked as an AA+ mage, the third most powerful rank for her type of magic. This equivocates to being a fearsome holder of her magic, yet not perfect. Plus, even if hit with a massive attack, her magic is not always lethal but can be if she wishes.
Weaknesses/Physical Flaws/Psychological Flaws:
- Body and Close Combat: Her body is weaker than older, battle hardy warriors with beefed up upper body muscles. She has the average physical strength of a normal girl her age, and cannot partake in intense hand-to-hand force like swords or martial art techniques. However, she can still clash with Raising Heart when needed. If someone attacks at close-range or from behind with quick speed, she might be in trouble with slower movements.
- Barrier Jacket: Not fool-proof protection and cannot be relied upon alone. The Jacket's defensive mechanisms are stable, but can be bypassed with effort. Since Nanoha's is designed to leave the outfit thin and exposing enough flesh, the material can be slashed through to the point of bleeding to cause fatal injuries if she is struck hard enough by a lethal attack.
- Magic: Her top-notch attacks require moments of charging, but she uses magic like shields to compensate. The constant strain of boosting too much power over an extended period of years might result in internal harm.
- Linker Core: Nanoha has a magical organ in the middle of her cardiovascular cavity called a Linker Core. This spherical organ holds the mage's magical potential. If the Linker Core is damaged or destroyed, she might not be able to use magic properly or ever again. The amount of recovery depends on the severity of the inflicted degree, and her energy replenishes at a quick enough rate to not hinder her fighting schedule.
- Weapon: Since she trains to negate complications of using magic without Raising Heart, she currently is dependent on the device's strength, Nanoha is virtually powerless without the weapon to defend her. She can wield small doses of assistant magical power, shots of energy, and shields, but they are limited in control and attack resistance.
- Battle Talk: Since Nanoha has a strong desire to discover the center of a matter by talking first, she might hesitate before battle and be weakened if there is an unexpected attack from the enemy.
- Inexperienced: She needs to learn further and become more powerful because she has less than a year of practice under her belt. Plus, she has the disadvantage of not having knowledge in some areas and could be persuaded if she believes she is doing justice.
- Tiredness: With attention to work, Nanoha's body could fall prey to exertion and a lack of energy more easily than experienced warriors.
- Loneliness and Friends: Nanoha puts up a front so people do not worry about her. She stubbornly avoids speaking about grievances when lonely, but if prompted and is willing to talk, mostly confides in close friends. This does not interfere with her combat abilities, though may be used against her in the correct instances. Likewise as a caring friend, if Nanoha is frightened that her allies might be injured she will charge into battle to protect or save them. In truth, she looks out for others just as much as herself, and would never leave someone behind who requires help.
