Appearance:
Edward is, in all appearances, a young child of age 16; a normal boy... At first sight that is. His right arm and left leg are prosthetic limbs; auto-mail, which is a mixture of many different kinds of metals. The automail has artificial nerves which join directly to the real nerves of his body; which leads to sudden agony whenever he must have the limbs reattached after maintenance. Those limbs were lost when he was 11 years old; due to an ill-fated attempt at impossibly Alchemy. Overcome with grief at the loss of their mother; the two Elric brothers attempted to bring her back to life; resulting in lasting harm done to their physical bodies. Alphonse lost all of his body, Edward lost his arm. He gave up his leg to retrieve Alphonse's soul and seal in in a suit of armor. Those artificial limbs are the distinguishing features of the child; and plays a role in making him seem much older than he really is. The golden eyes are also unique, setting him apart from most human beings.
Edward stands at 4'11" tall; and his favorite attire consists of black and red clothing. He wears black pants along with a brown "utility" belt; black tank-top; and a black leather jacket trimmed with white, which has a fastening clasp at the base of his neck. The jacket's collar is always folded up, hiding most of Edward's neck. why? Because he feels like it. Edward likes the color red, because "it makes him look tough". As such, his signature clothing article is a hooded, crimson trench coat; which hangs to about halfway down his calves. On the back of the coat is a black symbol which appears to be an arrow (even a snake) curled around a crucifix. There is a crowd above the cross; and a pair of small wings which extend from the tip of the cross. It is the symbol for alchemy. His boots are heavy and also black; with red soles. Edward is often seen wearing a pair of white gloves; usually worn to hide his prosthetic arm. But wearing only one glove on the arm would look weird; so he wears both. His hair is a yellow-blond and the style normally consists of a simple braid. Occasionally, he'll be seen with a simple ponytail. He purposely leaves a small section of his bangs sticking up; almost like an antenna, because he believes it makes him look taller.
Personality:
He is headstrong and independent, openly showing disdain toward those who have authority; showing an unwilling attitude when given orders he disagrees with. He is stubborn and strong-willed; normally acting out of his own personal interests. He prefers a "fight now, ask questions later" series of actions; quick-tempered and prone to sudden violence. He is often foul mouthed, and says things without thinking or considering others. He doesn't believe in any "God" or religion; his beliefs revolve only around what science can prove. Anyone who tries to convince him of the supernatural will be rewarded with a long rant about how it is scientifically impossible. He doesn't "look before he leaps", and makes little or no plans before springing into actions. He can't stand staying in one place too long; and spends most of his time traveling around Amestris (France) and beyond.
However, Edward is almost noble at heart, trying to do the right thing no matter what happens. He is undeniably loyal to his friends and allies, willing to do anything to keep them safe. Having endured so much suffering and pain in his early life, he is quick to feel sympathy toward the suffering of others. Spirited and determined, he will pursue his goals until solid proof is given about impossibility. He shelters a strong sense of honor and justice, he can't stand bringing unnecessary harm down on others. Hurting innocents in the fray of battle can break his spirit and distract him from battle in an attempt to aid them; leaving himself wide open. He is more than willing to help other who have the will to move forward, but are physically or mentally incapable. He urges people to keep moving forward, leave their past behind; and take responsibility and fix their personal errors. Edward is energetic and deeply intelligent. His knowledge surpasses the knowledge of many, including other alchemists; due to the events that occurred in his attempt to bring back his deceased mother. But such extensive knowledge is often a burden; he is quick to discover lies and traps. Many truths most others would have overlooked are clear to him, and they are usually causes for him to become heavy-hearted or lost, dispirited and hopeless. He tries to put up a tough face when in the presence of others, but his emotions overflow at times which change him into a sulking, depressed child.
He is usually not easily distracted, particularly when immersed in research. He loves to read, to simply drink in more knowledge along with what he already knows. When the time is right, he is able to focus and lose the childish immaturity he often displays. When in battle, he is able to ignore most everything around him; and concentrate on his enemy and possible weakness. However; if his younger brother, Alphonse Elric, falls into some sort of danger; he loses all focus and rushes desperately to his brother's side. There is nothing more important to Edward than his brother; he carries a deeply embedded guilt at what Alphonse has become. He blames himself for the soul being bonded to armor, and would do anything to restore his brother to his former body; even if it means he himself cannot return to his own body with all real limbs. "No matter what happens, I'll make sure you get your body back..." He says this and similar things very often.
Edward was forced to grow up too soon, it was up to him to make sure Alphonse remained safe after their mother's death. As orphans, and his status as the older brother, he took it upon himself to protect Alphonse. He begged to be fitted for Auto-Mail after the desperate attempt to bring back their mother, so that he would be able to set out with a goal to restore their bodies. But while he occasionally seems more mature than some adults, he usually displays a childish attitude. This is most obvious when someone refers to him as small, shrimp, shorty, etc. Size is a very touchy topic with him, and loses all control when referred to as such. tantrums full of both physical and verbal abuse break out without warning at any mention of his short height. He likes to do everything on his own, keeping up the child's attitude of "I don't need anyone else"; when he knows at heart he can't do everything alone.
Abilities & Weaknesses:
Powers/Abilities
- Alchemy: The literal definition of alchemy is the deconstruction and reconstruction of matter. Normally, it requires what is called a Transmutation Circle; an unusual, rune-like picture. Different Transmutation Circles lead to different changes. However, due to an unexpected occurrence in Edward's life, he is able to create a Circle by simply clapping his hands together; a very rare alchemy skill which only the most experienced can carry out. There is one main law in alchemy, the principle of "equivalent exchange". In order to create, or receive, something; another thing of equal value must be lost. For example, to make a bridge across a river; there needs to be enough earth on the side to be used for alchemy; to make a complete bridge. In Edward's case, he gave his left leg and his younger brother's soul for a creature he hoped was his deceased mother; and then retrieved his brother's soul by exchanging his right arm. He is able to transform his own auto-mail into weapons; a favorite being a small sword protruding from his right arm auto-mail.
Note: A substance known as the Philosopher's Stone is able to allow the user to "bypass" the Law of Equivalent Exchange. However, it isn't truly a loophole; as the exchange is made using the main ingredient; living human beings. - Martial Arts: Edward is rather skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and possesses speed and strength to pull through many battles without using alchemy. Having an auto-mail right arm and left leg makes strikes from those appendages more dangerous than the flesh and bone of his remaining limbs.
- Knowledge: During his attempted transmutation of his deceased mother; Edward was allowed to see "The Truth"; which filled his brain with knowledge which can surpass even the most learned college professors or scientists. He knows things others would have no idea about; which is partially why he is such a skilled Alchemist. Anything science related, he is quick to understand; or he'll research until he learns what he seeks.
Weaknesses/Physical Flaws/Psychological Flaws:
- Edward shelters a deep belief in the value of life. If he can avoid killing, he will do so; and tends to back out of battles which would be better off finished. Sparing lives leads to continued pursuit by his enemies. He is gentle and compassionate at heart, merciful and pure. But do to the blood that already stains his hands, he feels hopelessly lost and often confused. Should someone he really cares about land in immense danger, Edward loses all focus, and become willing to sacrifice anything to save that person (normally Alphonse or Winry)
- His biggest weakness is the auto-mail appendages. They are extremely durable and strong; thanks to his mechanic and childhood friend, Winry Rockbell. But when broken or unusable, he becomes almost helpless. He has learned to rely on them in fights as well as everyday life; but they are machines. No machine is 100% efficient, and Edward tends to break his metal limbs often due to constant battle. If the right arm becomes dysfunctional, Edward can no longer use alchemy by simply clapping his hands; he needs both arms to do so. Time must be wasted for him to draw a transmutation circle like most other alchemists in order to use the science. His agile battle tactics slow and he becomes an easy target if the leg fails on him.
- Probably his most well known flaw; his hatred of his own size. Edward loses all patience and slips into a child rage when referred to as Shorty, Pipsqueak, or anything similar. When is such a rage, he becomes even more reckless in his determination to beat the hell out of the culprit; something many enemies have taken advantage of in a fight.
History:
(First part Taken Directly from Wikipedia. I take no credit for it. A few date edits made to fit the roleplay time period.)
Born to Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim of Resembool (A small, rural village in France) in the winter of 1997, Edward's first few years were relatively happy; but after the sudden departure of his father during the lad's formative years, was left with his mother and younger brother Alphonse as his only family. The three Elrics lived in peace in a rural village and the boys began displaying a remarkable talent for alchemy at a young age, much to the joyful astonishment of his mother. However, early in the year 2002 (Edward was Age 5), Trisha contracted an illness that had been spreading in the area and died, leaving her two sons orphaned. Even while mourning, mired in grief, Edward vowed to his brother that the two of them would find a way to bring their dear mother back to life with the power of alchemy.
Edward and Alphonse spent the next few years living on their own in the Elric family home, supported by their close childhood friend Winry Rockbell and her grandmother Pinako, and pursuing the alchemical knowledge necessary for their planned resurrection. Although they had gained a great deal of information and comprehension regarding the extended basics of the craft, before long it became apparent to the young prodigies that there was only so far they could go while being self-taught. In a stroke of good fortune, Resembool was visited by an exceptionally skilled alchemist named Izumi Curtis who, after some persuasion, agreed to take the Elric brothers on as her apprentices provided they pass a preliminary test. She brought the boys to Yock Island near the town of Dublith in the southern region of France, where she informed them that they were to survive for one full month without alchemy. If, at the end of their ordeal, they could correctly explain the concept "One is All and All is One", they would begin their training under her wing.
While there, the brothers discovered self-reliance and gained new abilities and insights relevant to living in the world under their own power from having to forage and hunt for food as well as fend off periodic attacks from Mason, an employee at the Curtises' butcher shop who had disguised himself as a masked wild man at Izumi's behest. Coming to realize that, as a human, he is but a small part of the world and universe as a whole, but that the world and universe cannot exist without a collective of small parts, it is Edward who answered Izumi's riddle properly when she finally returned. For the next five months, the Elric brothers were subjected to Izumi's intensive alchemy and martial arts training, growing significantly in both mind and body and gaining a great deal of alchemical knowledge before returning to Resembool. Though instructed specifically by Izumi to understand that death is an irreversible part of the flow of the world and that acceptance of such is important to the "One is All, All is One" concept, the boys dove headlong into their plan to resurrect their mother upon their homecoming, having advanced their knowledge while abroad and discovered the basics to a forbidden practice called Human Transmutation.
Devising a Human Transmutation Circle, amassing the elemental ingredients for an adult human body and offering their own blood as soul and biological data, the boys secretly initiated the Human Transmutation secretly in their home. Unfortunately, the Human Transmutation resulted in a Rebound; Alphonse and Edward were pulled into The Gate. Encountering the mysterious being called Truth, Edward was stripped of his left leg in exchange for crossing into God's domain and peeking at the Gate's vast wealth of alchemical knowledge. Maimed and bleeding, Edward was returned to the human dimension to find that Alphonse had not yet returned from his disappearance into the Gate, that the mother they had attempted to revive was a grotesque mass of organs only capable of sustaining life for a few moments and that his own sojourn into the Gate had granted him the curious ability to perform transmutations merely by clapping his hands together, without the aid of a Transmutation Circle - in the same style used by Izumi. Desperate to at least have his brother by his side, Edward willfully performed another Human Transmutation to call him back, this time sacrificing his right arm in exchange for Al's soul, which he bound chemically to an antique suit of armor with a Blood Rune before passing out from severe blood loss. Alphonse carried Ed to the Rockbell house, where a shocked Pinako and Winry performed emergency surgery to save the young boy's life.
For some time afterward, Edward remained in a sorrowful torpor until Lt. Colonel Roy Mustang arrived in Resembool on an inaccurate tip regarding possible State Alchemist candidates. Upon discovering the bloody remains of the brothers' failed experiment, Mustang confronted Edward at the Rockbell home and persuaded him to consider joining the State Alchemist program as a means to perhaps restore his limbs and his brother's body someday. Edward, driven by the guilt of what his ambition had done to his little brother, commissioned Pinako and Winry to craft him an auto-mail arm and leg in order for him to follow Mustang's advice. When told that the surgery would be excruciating and that recovery would take at least three years, Ed commented that the pain would be nothing compared to Alphonse's suffering and promised to finish recovery in a single year.
In the fall of 2009, his new auto-mail limbs complete, twelve-year-old Edward ventured with Mustang to Central City (Capitol of France) to apply for his state certification. After passing the written examination and psychological evaluation, Edward astounded all the officials present - including the Führer, King Bradley himself - with his superb and unique abilities and even managed to win the Führer's favor with his brazenness. Within a week, he was issued his license and the symbolic title of "Fullmetal Alchemist". On October 3rd, Edward returned to Resembool, packed up his belongings, burned down the Elric house (claiming that, without it, he and his brother would have no means of turning back from their goal) and left home with Alphonse to find a way to restore him to normal.
(This Part Not directly from Wikipedia; Summarized history after early childhood)
The two brothers proceeded on their journey, quickly learning about the Philosophers Stone and what it could do. they set their feet firmly on the path to discover the Stone and it's secrets; and hoped to use it to restore their bodies. Along their journey; they ran into Shou Tucker (an alchemist who created Chimeras and other life, later getting into massive trouble for using his own daughter and dog to create a talking Chimera; the same way he used his wife two years earlier.), Scar (A survivor from the Ishvalan War who believed it was his purpose to destroy all State Alchemists due to their "defiling of God's creations"). He clashed with Edward, and was stopped from killing the young alchemist with the timely arrival of Roy Mustang and other military personnel), and Dr. Tim Marcoh (who had researched the Philosopher's stone for many years and finally passed that research onto the Elric brothers shortly before his own death).
They returned to Central City to do more research, and discovered that the Stone's main ingredient was living human beings. Edward lost all hope for a short amount of time; knowing he'd never be able to use such an evil object to restore Alphonse's and his own bodies. He began to believe that he wouldn't be able to fulfill his promise to Alphonse. With encouragement from Winry, Alphonse, and 2nd Lieutenant Maria Ross, his hope was restored; and the two continued their journey. They traveled to Laboratory 5 in order to learn more about the the Stone's creation, which brought them face to face with homunculi; the results of past failed human transmutations. Edward was landed in the hospital, Alphonse began to doubt if he really ever exists thanks to the talk of Barry the Chopper. The two brothers would soon make up; both of their hope would be renewed, and they continued South to seek out and speak with Ishvalans about the Stone's creation; hoping their was another way, which didn't involve human lives, to create one.
Along the southern trip, they would run into Greed, another homunculus, who would kidnap Alphonse to try learning how to become immortal. With some help from military allies, Edward and Alphonse were reunited, and they planned to return to Central. While there, they meet Ling Yao (a prince from Xing), who would later become one with Greed (who was killed by Edward in battle). Edward later returned to Resembool to have some repair work performed on his arm; and he ran into his long-lost father, Van Hohenheim. Edward shows no pleasure at meeting his father after he abandoned his family many years ago; and spends the night with Pinako and Winry. Hohenheim left the next morning. Edward took Pinako with him to dig up the remains of the thing he created in the human transmutation; and Pinako confirmed it had no traits in common with Edward's mother. Edward began to believe that Alphonse's body still exists somewhere in the gates of Truth.
How he came to be here:
While Edward was quite ready to start hunting for a way to retrieve Alphonse's body, he would be forced to wait. Just as Alphonse and Edward were about to leave to try learning how to get the body back, Edward received a summons via phone call from the Military Headquarters. Irritably, he tried to get out of returning so that he and Alphonse could research more; but Colonel Roy Mustang reminded him about his military obligations. If he did not answer the summons as once, he would be jeopardizing his State Alchemist License; could even be considered a deserter. Still grumbling, Edward finally agreed to return; and the two brothers arrived two days later. Edward was given assignment to take a plane west; he was being sent to a place called New Masada, where he and a few other specialized soldiers would be on active duty. From what he heard; some sort of alien race had arrived with a warning about another alien race which planned on intruding Earth. Any sort of defense from anywhere was greatly needed; and he had been volunteered for the job by the Colonel.
Renowned for his skills as an Alchemist, the higher-ups had agreed; and so he now had no choice. Edward was furious with the Colonel, but there was nothing to be done. Alphonse originally was supposed to accompany Edward to active duty; but the older brother insisted he stay behind where it was relatively safe. There was no telling what he'd have to do while on such Military Business, he might be forced into committing terrible murders or other horrid actions just as what had happened in the Ishvalan War which took place during World War I. The last thing he wanted was for his younger brother to witness such carnage. It took much persuasion, but Alphonse finally agreed to remain behind at the Military HQ; where he'd be under the constant protection of the Colonel and his immediate subordinates. Within a day, Edward was packed and sent to catch his plane; still irritated with the forced postponement of getting back his brother's body.

(This is one of my starting thread posts on another site; and Anime and Kingdom hearts Crossover)
The sun was at it's highest point over it's daily journey across the sky, the golden rays touched everything below into its own sort of beauty. there was a light, but constant breeze; and the garden itself was full of green things. It was definitely summer; and the affect was quite pleasant. It wasn't ever too warm here, he could comfortably wear his choice of attire; Which consisted of long black pants, black tank top, a light black jacket, and the bright red coat which was basically his trademark. Overall, a lot of black. But even so, he was content lounging around in this main garden of Hollow Bastion when the temperature was approximately 70 degrees. The blond-haired youth was sitting upon the lush, green grass; leaning against a tree and resting his white-gloved hands behind his head. The bark was unyielding, one of many things which really didn't change much. If only more occurrences in life could be as certain and unchanging, like leaning on the wood... But no... Life had it's twists and turns. Whenever one fell over as support was lost, all he or she could do was stand up and walk again... A deep sigh passed through the youth's throat as he shifted into a more comfortable position. The golden eyes traveled around what was once called Radiant Garden, according to some sources, and he could understand why such a name have been given to this place. But why change it? That was a question without an answer, but he honestly wasn't too interested in finding out the reason for the alias change.
The discomfort of an empty stomach was what motivated him to sit up properly; no longer ignoring the grumbling which was running through his stomach. He hadn't eaten since early that morning, it was about that time to return to the marketplace. He rose to his feet; reaching his arms into the sky to stretch the stiffened muscles in his upper body. There was a bit of a creaking sound as the metal plates within his right prosthetic arm shifted after lack of use. After a bit more stretching until the sounds stopped, the youth stifled a yawn and headed across the main path. Soon enough, he was back among buildings and people who were bustling about and tending to their own daily needs. As Edward made his way toward the main square, a few denizens of Hollow Bastion send him friendly waves and calls of greeting; people he'd gotten on friendly terms with by simply helping them out. He returned greetings and continued on his way; soon arriving in the main square. Here, there were countless stores and diners; it was almost always crowded.
He turned toward a certain diner, which had become his favorite over the month since his untimely arrival in this place. They served meals that were similar to those in Amestris; so he felt more at home here than anywhere else. Thinking about Amestris almost immediately sent a pang of homesickness through his gut. He was constantly worrying about Alphonse these days; he'd had no chance to speak to Al before he was unceremoniously dragged out of his own world. He had no way of finding out if his younger brother was OK, or of informing Al that he himself was alive and well. He had no way of maintaining his auto-mail either, as Winry wasn't exactly here. That was yet another concern always lingering on the edge of his mind. How long could he stay here before the auto-mail arm and leg needed their routine tune-up? What would he do when that time came? Every type of auto-mail was unique to its creator; he couldn't exactly go to some metal works store here and ask them to look over his limbs. They wouldn't have any idea how to handle the prosthetics. Besides... He'd learned shortly after arrival that this place had technology which was far less advanced than that of Amestris. He hadn't seen anything that would even hint at the existence of prosthetic limbs here; much less auto-mail... He'd kept his artificial limbs hidden from most everyone here, simply to avoid an uproar. Only one person had seen the metal arm so far; and that was the manager of the diner. She didn't question him about it, and he was grateful.
Finally, much as he hated to admit it; he sort of missed the Colonel and his fellow soldiers. Harsh-tongued and serious when he needed to be, annoyingly humorous at other times as he was... Edward had learned that Roy Mustang was fairly reliable... Well... Sometimes. It had, after all, been the Colonel who had told him of the State Alchemists; and had given him the strength to go on after that ill-fated Human Transmutation attempt. "Will you sit in that chair, wallowing in self-pity? Or will you stand up and seize the chance that the military can give you? If you believe the possibility exists for getting your bodies back, you should seek it out, keep moving; whatever it takes. Even if the way ahead lies in a river if blood..." Those words had motivated him to be fitted for Auto-mail; and had helped him gain at least a portion of his life back. They had given him a purpose, a reason to keep living; which was to travel and get Alphonse's and his own bodies back... That was one thing that he'd always be grateful to Mustang for; even if he'd never admit it to anyone's face.
Edward pushed open the door of the diner and walked in; allowing a weak smile to cross over his features. How sad... The Full metal Alchemist, the"Hero of the People", the child prodigy who had been through so much and still kept moving forward... And here he was, feeling homesick after only a month of absence... In the end, he really was still only a child; wasn't he? The voice of the diner manager brought him out of his reverie; the woman was waving to him from behind the bar table. He was a regular customer here, she knew him by name and they were on very good terms; he'd even repaired the main oven she used on one occasion. "Hello, Morgan." He said as he walked over to take a seat at the table, loving how tall he felt sitting in these weirdly high chairs. Obviously, he didn't plan on drinking any alcoholic beverages; she brought him the drink which tasted a bit like orange soda, as well as some water. He skimmed over the menu which he almost knew by heart thanks to his frequent visits; and settled with ordering a sandwich. His back was to the entrance, not that he really cared at this point. The manager, Morgan, offered him a friendly smile, then turned back to her task of arranging the beverages on their shelves; leaving him to work on his sandwich.
